Company description

We're a nonprofit startup that builds open-source educational software designed to increase learning opportunities for communities with limited access to the Internet.

Job description

You will be working on the ecosystem of applications around Kolibri, a new open-source educational platform that aims to support sourcing, remixing, and distributing educational content to people who don't have reliable internet access. See this product overview for more info.

You will be working closely with the core engineering team, ideally out of our offices in San Diego. We are looking for core team members who identify strongly with Learning Equality's mission to bring basic education to under-resourced communities around the world.

About you

  • You care deeply about making the world a better place, believe in the power of learning, strive to promote equality, and resonate with our statement of core values.
  • You love to build things, and like to think carefully about how best to serve the needs of a diverse set of users.

Required qualifications

You have extensive experience with both frontend and backend web development.

On the front-end, you’re comfortable with both vanilla JS and modern UI frameworks (especially Vue.js!). On the back-end, you’ve worked with databases, middleware, and API design.

You should also be well-attuned to details of your craft, and be thoughtful about both the user experience of the applications you build and the sustainability of the code you write.

Optional qualifications

Learning Equality is still a fairly small organization, and we each wear many hats, so experience in any of the following areas would be valued:

  • Education, EdTech, or pedagogy (e.g. teaching/tutoring, learning games, LMS)
  • UI design
  • Unit and integration testing
  • Internationalization and accessibility
  • Python (particularly Django), which we use on the backend
  • Experience with Vue.js or Backbone.js

  • Flexible and generous vacation policy and work schedule
  • Retirement plan with matching employer contributions
  • Full health care, dental, and vision insurance
  • Education fund to support ongoing professional development
  • Well-stocked snack, drink, and games cabinet in the office (for onsite folks)
  • Satisfaction of improving millions of people’s lives around the world
